The Reformation
In 1517 Martin Luther challenged the pope. Thanks to printing his ideas spread fast, and princes and cities across northern Europe broke with Rome.
A century of religious wars followed, from France to the Netherlands to England. The Thirty Years' War in Germany killed millions.
The 1648 Peace of Westphalia let each ruler choose his state's religion. Europe was now a system of sovereign states, not one Christendom.
